Michelle's Kangaroo Island 101

Michelle's Kangaroo Island 101

Heya Groovy travellers! It’s Michelle again!

This time I want to give you some practical information regarding the Groovy Grape Kangaroo Island trip. After about an hours drive you arrive at the ferry ready to board! The ferry itself is a nice experience, as there is a deck above on which you can stand outside and look over the water, you might even spot some dolphins! Departures from Adelaide city are around 6am. Brekky (breakfast) on the first day is not included so if you didn’t have time for a proper breakfast because of the early start, you can buy a coffee and fresh snacks at the café aboard the ferry. Both of the ferries are twin-hulled catamarans with air-conditioned lounges, and there are even TV’s for your entertainment! The ferry takes about 45 minutes to get to Kangaroo Island.

Seal Bay

So what is included in this Kangaroo Island adventure you are wondering? The tour includes all meals (1 breakfast, 2 lunches & 1 dinner), dorm accommodation at a farm house, ferry transfers and National Park entry fees. You will do a beach walk at Seal Bay, sand boarding at the Little Sahara, kayaking down Harriet River (in summer) and you will go snorkelling and swimming at beautiful North Coast beaches (also in summer). The hire of the sand boards, kayaks and the snorkelling gear is also included in the price!  If you'd like to do a quad bike tour this is an Adrenalin Plus Option and $79 for a 1.5 hour tour.

Sandboarding at the Little Sahara

The farm accommodation is great; the dorms sleep up to 8 persons per room in bunk beds. There are showers and bathrooms near the dorms. There is a barbie (BBQ) outside and all sorts of wildlife which inhabit the property! On the first morning we stop at Penneshaw where you are able to purchase your wine and beer to enjoy with your dinner at the farm. After dinner you can sit around the campfire, don’t forget to look up at the sky, the stars are beautiful! If you would wish to upgrade your accommodation it’s possible, but subject to availability. Book ahead to guarantee a private room. The upgrade is for a double/twin/single cabin with ensuite bathroom. A single upgrade is $130 and a double upgrade is $50 per person extra.

On the second day you will visit the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. From Admirals Arch you can spot a colony of New Zealand Fur Seals. Make sure you look carefully as they are pretty well camouflaged on the rocks! You will also spend time in the Flinders Chase National Park, where you will do some short hikes. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes for this reason.

So what should you bring for the tour?

Hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable enclosed walking shoes, warm clothes for the evening, windproof/waterproof jacket, water bottle, towel and swimwear. The luggage limit is one small bag per person. And don’t forget your sense of adventure offcourse!

During this 2-day tour you will see all the important highlights of the island! I wouldn’t recommend staying on Kangaroo Island after the tour, as it would mean dropping you off at Penneshaw and there isn’t a whole lot to do around there. The island is quite big (155km wide) and you need to have a car to get anywhere. But no worries, the 2 days will definitely cover everything you want to see on the island!
